Originally from Philadelphia, PA, David moved to Boston, MA to attend college and though there were some stopovers around the country along the way, he has called New England home for longer than any other location. Currently he lives in Somers, CT with his husband – Scantic River Artisans’ author and playwright, Howard Odentz.
After a first career in Operations/Sales & Marketing he then moved to his second career as an entrepreneur and now he is still working on his 3rd “career” in IT, Information Technology. After working at MassMutual Financial Group as an Enterprise Architect for 16 years, David is currently a Senior Principal Systems Architect at United Healthcare, acting as the lead technologist for integrating with new corporate acquisitions into the corporate systems.
David became interested in his artistic side as he was called on to design and build sets over the years while performing and directing in college, community and regional theater. Set building and designing led to refinishing furniture which lead to faux finishing and other crafts. Eventually a birthday gift brought him to Snow Farm, the New England Craft Program where he fell in love with lampwork glass in a weekend class. Lampwork involves melting and forming glass to create objects, sculpture and beads. The beads connected him to jewelry making, especially jewelry featuring his own handcrafted glass beads, often created with recycled glass. Turning used up wine bottles into small sculptures, cheese trays, or beautiful beads makes him very happy. Seeing his crafts being enjoyed by others makes him happier still.
Glass Art will likely be David’s retirement career or, considering his history, his “first” retirement career.
